Where grief, love, and God’s presence meet
There is a particular ache in loving someone who isn’t coming home. Their chair is still there. Their favorite mug waits in the cabinet. Their laugh seems to echo in the room, even though the house has fallen quiet. This is the tender, holy space of Grief—where an Empty Chair becomes a constant reminder of Loss And Remembrance, and yet, somehow, a place where Finding Hope begins to grow as well.
During holidays, the empty chair feels louder than any song playing in the background. At Christmas, you may find yourself glancing at the spot where they always sat to open gifts. On birthdays, you might set out an extra plate without thinking, then quietly slide it back, feeling the sting of remembering they won’t walk through the door. Even on ordinary Tuesdays, when you sit down with a quick dinner or a cup of coffee, that space can whisper, “They should be here.”
The empty chair symbolizes so much: the conversations you wish you could still have, the hugs you long to feel, the everyday routines now broken. Yet it also holds memories—stories told a hundred times, jokes that still make you smile, and the warmth of a presence that shaped your life. In this way, the chair is both a symbol of deep ache and a gentle altar of Celebrating Life.
Grief doesn’t just arrive on anniversaries and holidays. It slips into the smallest moments: hearing a song they loved at the grocery store, reaching for your phone to share a funny story, or catching the scent of their cologne on an old scarf. Sometimes grief feels like a wave that knocks you over. Other times, it’s a quiet ache that simply sits beside you, like a shadow in that empty seat.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Shouldn’t I be over this by now?” please hear this in a friendly, gentle way: love doesn’t have an expiration date, so grief doesn’t either. Your ongoing sadness doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you loved deeply, and that love still matters. This is part of Christian Devotion too—honoring the people God gave us by allowing ourselves to feel the weight of their absence.

Simple daily spaces often become sacred places of remembrance and hope.
In Isaiah 41:10, God doesn’t promise that we’ll never face loss. Instead, He promises something even more personal: “I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you… I will uphold you.” When the chair is empty, God’s presence is not. He sits with you in the quiet, hears the prayers you can’t put into words, and holds the tears you hide from everyone else.
Sometimes His help looks like a verse that pops into your mind at just the right moment. Other times, it’s a friend who sends a text, a song that brings comfort, or the surprising strength you feel when you get through a day you were dreading. This is God meeting you in your pain—quietly, faithfully, upholding you with His righteous right hand when you feel like you can’t stand on your own.
💡 Gentle Reminder: You don’t have to “be strong” for God to be strong for you. Your weakness is where His comfort shines brightest.
It can feel confusing when you find yourself laughing one moment and crying the next. You might worry that enjoying a holiday meal or a family gathering somehow betrays the person you miss. But joy and sorrow are not enemies; they can sit together at the same table. You can miss them fiercely and still smile at a silly story they used to tell. You can feel the ache of their absence and still enjoy the warmth of the people who remain.
This is the strange beauty of grief in Christ: we mourn, but not as those who have no hope. We carry sorrow in one hand and Finding Hope in the other. We remember the cross, where Jesus entered into our deepest pain, and the empty tomb, where He promised that death does not get the final word. Because of Him, even our tears are threaded with a quiet, stubborn kind of joy.
As you look at that empty chair—at the table, in the living room, in your heart—remember this: absence does not erase love. The love you shared is real, enduring, and still shaping who you are. In God’s hands, that love is never wasted. It becomes part of your story, part of the way you comfort others, part of the way you understand His heart for you.
Scripture tells us that there is coming a day when God will wipe every tear from our eyes, and death, mourning, crying, and pain will be no more. In that promised future, every “empty chair” will be filled again—every broken circle made whole in the presence of Jesus. Until then, we live in the in-between: loving someone who isn’t coming home to this house, while trusting that they are safely home with Him, and that we will see them again.
So if you’re sitting across from an empty chair today, be gentle with yourself. Let the memories come. Let the tears fall if they need to. Thank God for the gift of that life, even as you grieve the loss. And hold onto this hope: the God who sits with you now will one day seat you at a table where nothing and no one is missing. Until that day, may His presence be your comfort, His promise your courage, and His love the steady hand that holds you fast.
It is exhausting to wake up every day feeling like you are supposed to have it all figured out. The quiet overwhelm, the constant second-guessing, and the feeling that everyone else seems to have a map while you are just trying to find your footing.
